Computing

I am interested in various aspects of computing, some of these are detailed below.

LaTeX

LaTeX is an excellent typesetting system. I used it to write my PhD thesis and other files such as my CV. In writing such a large document like a thesis I learnt a few tricks, and I wrote some of my tips on these pages: Using Endnote with LaTeX and BibTeX and A thesis template for Auckland University

The Web

I have in interest in HTML and CSS and other web languages and technologies. I am a bit of a purist and eschew WYSIWYG editors, so all the webpages on this site from 2002 to 2012 were written by hand in notepad++, in 2012 I converted the site to Drupal. You can read more about this website.

GPS

I contribute to the NZ Open GPS Project which creates free weekly maps of New Zealand for Garmin GPS units. Zenbu is a collaboratively edited directory of businesses and places that is integrated into the map as POIs.

Phylogenetics

Phylogenetic analysis requires specialty computer programs. I have written a tutorial on using Modeltest, which is an application that selects the best model of DNA evolution using a given sequence alignment.
